At the start of Class 1, finger-counting is normal. By the end of Class 1, it should be mostly gone — replaced by quick mental recall. If your child is in the second half of Class 1 and still finger-counting for 8 + 5, that's worth addressing now. The longer it persists, the harder the rewire.

A confident Class 1 child should answer single-digit additions (like 7 + 6) within 2-3 seconds. Two-digit additions (like 23 + 14) should take under 10 seconds. Speed isn't the goal — accuracy is — but if your child is slow and getting answers wrong, the foundation needs work.

Flashcards and apps are fine for practice, but they don't teach mental math. Practice without underlying conceptual understanding plateaus quickly. The Bhanzu approach builds the understanding first, then practice locks it in.
