5 Speed Math Techniques You Can Try Right Now

These are usable today. Practise them with your child for two weeks and watch the calculator habit start to fade. Each technique is built on real number understanding — so it grows with the child instead of collapsing when problems change.

ROUND & ADJUST 47 + 38 = ? Round: 50 + 38 = 88 Adjust: 88 − 3 = 85 85 (in under 2 seconds)

The "Round and Adjust" Technique

Instead of calculating 47 + 38 directly, round to easier numbers and adjust. 47 + 38 = 50 + 38 − 3 = 85. Most addition and subtraction problems become trivial once your child can round confidently. This single technique replaces hundreds of memorised additions.

The "Halve and Double" Trick

For multiplication, halve one number and double the other. 25 × 16 = 50 × 8 = 400. 15 × 14 = 30 × 7 = 210. The new numbers are usually easier to handle. This single technique covers a huge range of multiplication problems your child will meet in class.

Left-to-Right Calculation

Most of us were taught to add right-to-left, carrying as we go. Speed calculators work left-to-right. For 347 + 256: add hundreds first (500), then tens (90), then ones (13). Combine: 603. It feels backward but it's faster — because you start with the most important digits.

The "Numbers Near 100" Trick

For 97 × 98: each is close to 100. The differences are 3 and 2. The answer is (97 − 2) joined with (3 × 2): 9506. Works for any two numbers close to 100 — and also for 1000. Once a child sees this work three times, they're hooked. Pattern over procedure.

Squaring Numbers Ending in 5

For any number ending in 5: the answer ends in 25. The front of the answer is the tens digit multiplied by (tens digit + 1). For 35²: 3 × 4 = 12, stick 25 → 1225. For 75²: 7 × 8 = 56 → 5625. Once your child sees this three times, they'll refuse to use a calculator on these again.

The foundation underneath every technique. Number sense is knowing that 47 is close to 50, and that 50 × 8 = 400, so 47 × 8 is just under 400. Children with strong number sense catch their own errors — because answers that "feel wrong" usually are. We train this first; everything else follows.

Pattern Recognition

Frequently Asked Questions

From Class 1 (around age 6), simple mental math practice begins. Real speed math techniques make sense from Class 3 or 4 onwards, when a child has solid arithmetic. By Class 5–6, full speed math fluency becomes possible. Starting earlier is fine but the techniques land harder once the foundation is in place.

No — it complements. Bhanzu teaches the school method and the speed method. The child knows both. The school method is what they write on the page. The speed method is what they use to get the answer faster, and to check their school work. Two tools, not a replacement.
