How Does Place Value To 1,000 Work?
Place value is the idea that a digit's worth depends on its column. In the number $546$, the $5$ is not "five", it is five hundreds. Written out, $546 = 500 + 40 + 6$, which is called expanded form. Your child learns that ten ones make a ten, ten tens make a hundred, and ten hundreds make a thousand.
This is the foundation for every other skill on this page. A child who sees $546$ as "5, 4, 6" instead of "500, 40, 6" will struggle later with regrouping and comparing numbers.
How to help at home:
Build the number. Use base-ten blocks, or stack coins and bundles of ten straws, so a hundred is physically ten tens.
Say it three ways. "Five hundred forty-six" / "5 hundreds, 4 tens, 6 ones" / "$500 + 40 + 6$."
Compare with symbols. Write two numbers and ask which is bigger using $>$, $=$, or $<$, starting from the hundreds column.
How Do You Add And Subtract With Regrouping?
Regrouping (older textbooks call it carrying and borrowing) is the skill 2nd graders wrestle with most. It comes straight from place value: when a column reaches ten, you trade it up to the next column.
Worked example, addition with regrouping: add $47 + 38$.

The same method scales to hundreds. Add $356 + 278$: ones give $6 + 8 = 14$ (write 4, carry 1), tens give $5 + 7 + 1 = 13$ (write 3, carry 1), hundreds give $3 + 2 + 1 = 6$, so $356 + 278 = 634$.
Worked example, subtraction with borrowing: subtract $62 - 48$.

How to help at home:
Show the trade with objects before the written method: physically swap ten unit cubes for one ten-stick.
Line up the columns on squared paper so ones sit under ones. Misaligned digits cause most errors.

What Are Arrays, And How Do They Start Multiplication?
Second grade does not teach the full times tables. It plants the seed: equal groups, skip counting, and arrays. An array is objects in equal rows, and it is the picture behind multiplication.
Four rows of three apples is an array. Your child can count them as repeated addition, $3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12$, or read the array as $4 \times 3 = 12$. Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s is the same idea building toward the tables.

What Are The Most Common Mistakes With 2nd Grade Math?
These are the errors 2nd graders hit most often, and each has a clean fix at home.
Regrouping in the wrong direction, or forgetting to carry.
Where it slips in:
A child adds each column separately and writes the two-digit result in full, turning $47 + 38$ into $715$ (writing 15, then 8 beside it).
Don't do this:
Do not let a column hold ten or more without trading. Do not write a two-digit number inside one column.
The correct way:
When a column reaches ten, write the ones digit and carry the ten to the next column: $7 + 8 = 15$ means write $5$, carry $1$.
Confusing a digit with its value.
Where it slips in:
A child reads the $5$ in $546$ as "five" and cannot say why $546$ is bigger than $498$.
Don't do this:
Do not treat the digits as separate small numbers with no columns.
The correct way:
Say the value: the $5$ is five hundreds. Compare from the left, hundreds first, then tens, then ones.
Counting time or coins by ones.
Where it slips in:
